Said by many to be the whisky-based cocktail that whisky haters will love, The Lakes Blood and Sand makes it debut on Halloween month…

The Lakes Blood and Sand: Sweet, palatable and a lot more tasty than it sounds! This delicious, red-hued concoction is made up of the ONE British Isles Blended Whisky, a dash of sweet vermouth and a splash of cherry liqueur. Top up with orange juice for a smoky-sweet effect, and Hey Presto! … You’ve got yourself a party.

This whisky classic first appeared in Henry Craddock’s 1930 edition of The Savoy Cocktail Book, where it’s unlikely blend of ingredients created quite a stir at cocktail parties. Although this is the first written record of the cocktail, it’s inspiration allegedly came years earlier, based on the 1922 silent movie, Blood and Sand. The film starred at-the-time heart-throb Rudolph Valentino. He portrayed a bullfighter, who rose from humble roots, only to become the greatest matador in Spain, and eventually lose it all.

Rudolph Valentino

Despite being considered a sex-symbol in his day, Italian-born Valentino was somewhat ridiculed by American journalists for his European sense of style, discourteously deeming him a ‘dandy‘… (How rude!) Nevertheless, American men at the time much preferred the typically “masculine” Douglas Fairbanks as their leading man of choice.

Douglas Fairbanks

So to speak… if a straight whisky is Douglas Fairbanks, then the Blood and Sand cocktail is Rudolph Valentino. Like Valentino, the Blood and Sand is a sleek, sweet and chic cocktail, that takes whisky as its base spirit and dresses it up with peculiar extras, creating an all-round delicious finish. It’s the perfect wild-card drink for people who believe they don’t like whisky, and a palatable switch of momentum for whisky-lovers who usually drink theirs neat. The deep amber colour of the cherry brandy is said to represent the blood and the the orange juice, the sand.

Our very own cocktail connoisseur, Keiron Hall said, “When designing the new cocktail list, I could have created millions, but I think one of my favourites is ‘The Blood and Sand’ cocktail. It shows whisky as a versatile spirit and breaks the barrier of whisky cocktails needing to be strong and boozy.”

So, how do I make it?

25ml The ONE British Isles Blended Whisky

25ml Sweet Vermouth

25ml Cherry Liqueur

35ml Orange Juice

Add all ingredients to a shaker, shake fast for 10-15 seconds, and pour into a martini glass. Rimming the glass with sugar is optional, depending on your preference. Garnish with an orange and enjoy!

We think this is the perfect accompaniment for (adult’s ) Halloween parties! Give it a try and send us your pictures
