We’d love to welcome you to our Alternative Burns Night on the 26th and 27th of January

We’re kicking off 2018 with a bang, and we can’t wait for our upcoming annual Alternative Burns Night dinner. We’re welcoming guests to join us for an evening of ‘The Tales of Lanty Slee’, the infamous Lake District farmer, quarryman and notorious smuggler. To add a bit of Cumbrian magic to the evenings, we’ve invited along storytelling laureate, Taffy Thomas MBE, to tell his fantastic stories in the interludes between the courses. Attendees will be engrossed by the exciting anecdotes of Lancelot, his escapades taking you on a journey to the 19th century, whilst accompanying your culinary journey at The Lakes Distillery.

By the 1800s, smuggling was a prominent feature in many areas in Britain and Cumbria was no different; one of the most prominient figures in moonshine production being Lanty Slee. Born at the start of the 1800s, Lanty worked as a farmer by day but illegally smuggled whisky by night. To avoid detection, he distilled and his moonshine everywhere from caves and quarries to under the floors of farm buildings.

Despite being 10 shillings per gallon (expensive at the time!), Lanty’s whisky was sold mainly to “discerning local gentry and professional classes”. Lanty was somewhat resourceful; rather than leave empty-handed once the moonshine had been ‘delivered’ to those who bought it, he used the return journeys to smuggle back tobacco!

The evenings are sure to be one to remember! But, don’t just take our word for it, here’s some amazing feedback we received from the event last year.

“I just wanted to email to say what a FABULOUS evening my husband, my parents and I had on Friday 27th January at your Alternative Burns Evening. From the setting itself in the lovely boardroom, to the delightful service we received throughout the evening, to the great tales, riddles and story telling of Taffy Thomas, the excellent company of Dhavall, his wisdom and of course his spirits!

“The food was excellent and enjoyed by all of us – an absolutely top evening! We have been raving about it to friends and family all weekend and will have no hesitation in returning. Thank you to everyone involved in front and behind the scenes- it is very much appreciated!”
